NIE Number and Residency in Spain

To live, work, start a business, or carry out certain legal actions in Spain, you as a Swede will in many cases need an NIE number. For longer stays, you may also need to register your right of residence in Spain. The process varies depending on your situation and requires correct documentation.

We help you through the entire process, from assessing your needs to completed registration, with a focus on correct handling and minimizing delays.

What are an NIE number and residency?

NIE number

NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal identification number for foreigners in Spain. It is used for legal and financial activities, for example:

  • Buying a home
  • Opening a bank account
  • Starting a business
  • Entering into agreements
  • Contact with authorities

NIE in itself does not grant any right to live in Spain; it is an administrative identification.

Residency

For EU citizens, “residencia” in Spain is not a residence permit, but a registration of the right of residence under EU law. This is done by registering in the Registro Central de Extranjeros as a resident EU citizen.

As a general rule, you must register your right of residence if you intend to stay in Spain for more than 90 days. The right to stay in the country is based on EU rules, but registration is a requirement under Spanish law.

To be registered, you normally need to meet certain conditions, for example that you:

  • work in Spain,
  • run your own business,
  • have sufficient financial means to support yourself, or
  • have comprehensive health insurance in Spain

The registration is documented by a certificate (often called a “green card”), but it is not a permit in itself, rather a confirmation of your right to stay in the country.

What we help you with

We offer advice and practical support throughout the process:

  • Assessment of whether you need an NIE, registration of right of residence, or both
  • Application for NIE number
  • Application for registration as a resident EU citizen
  • Booking appointments with authorities
  • Compiling the necessary documentation

How it works

1. Assessment of your situation

We analyse your planned stay, activities, and needs to determine whether you need an NIE number, registration of right of residence (residencia), or both, and which requirements apply in your case.

2. Preparation of documents

We ensure the right documents are prepared and that applications are correctly completed, including documentation proving employment, self-employment, or sufficient financial means, as well as valid health insurance where required.

3. Appointment booking and application

We book an appointment with the relevant authority (e.g. Policía Nacional or Oficina de Extranjería) and guide you through the application process.

4. Completion

In many cases, an NIE application can be handled via a representative with a power of attorney, while registration of right of residence normally requires personal attendance. We ensure the process is carried out correctly in line with current requirements.

5. Follow-up

We follow up the case and ensure the registration is completed correctly, and provide guidance on any next steps, such as tax registration or other administrative measures.

Requirements for registering right of residence in Spain

As an EU citizen, you normally need to be able to show that you meet the conditions for right of residence under EU law. This means you belong to one of the following categories:

  • That you work in Spain (employed)
  • That you run your own business in Spain (autónomo or company)
  • That you have sufficient financial means to support yourself without burdening the Spanish social system, and comprehensive health insurance in Spain
  • That you are a student and meet specific requirements (including health insurance and means of support)
  • That you are a family member of an EU citizen who meets one of the conditions above

Which requirements and documentation are needed depends on your specific situation, and the application may vary slightly between different authorities and regions.

Common situations

You may need an NIE number and/or register your right of residence if you:

  • Buy a home or other real estate in Spain
  • Move to Spain to live, temporarily or permanently
  • Work as an employee or self-employed in Spain
  • Plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days
  • Have financial or legal ties to Spain, such as company involvement, investments, or agreements

Common challenges

The process can be difficult to manage without experience:

  • Limited access to bookable appointments with authorities
  • Varying document requirements depending on your situation
  • Incorrect or incomplete applications
  • Language barriers when dealing with authorities

Errors in the process can lead to delays or rejection.
